when i make a dress i select a design out of my sketch book. i consider the amount of fabric and lace it'll take to make the piece, as well as time, and what it could be coordinated with. sometimes i design dresses around each other, or to go with a specific blouse. i was COMPLEETLY out of lace, and with a substantial amount of fabric, i thought i would be able to make an over the top, VERY frilly VERY girly dress with out the need of lace. little did i know at the time just how much work lateral frills are! it worked out to be 35 inch long strips of fabric ruffled down to 14-15 inch long frills. the top part alone took 105 inches 3 inch wide fabric. so you can only imagine what it took to make it around the total with of the skirt portion TWICE, and to surround the middle ruffles. it was VERY time consuming, and the end result turned out super heavy. BUT im glad i did it. i love the dress, and i think detail like this makes it look professional and unique.

I'm sewinf a halloween costume much like this, but the skirt is ruffled all around (the horizontal ruffles on your beautiful dress) and I was wondering how you got the ruffls so nice. did you sew them to fabric underneath?

yes
the horizontal ruffles are gathered in the middle and sewed down so there's equal fabric on each side of the seam

I hope you have a ruffling foot!

i did. i hated the way it made ruffles and i threw it out 0_0
i do all my ruffles with a loose straight stitch that i pull tight to gather.

when i do ruffles i put a loose stitch through the top and pull it so it gathers. i had a ruffle maker but i hated how it made ruffles, they looked funny to me so i threw it out. and with certain fabric i have to do my hand cuz my sewing machine isn't the best.

Wow, I'm very impressed! I love ruffles to death. You did an awesome job. I could only imagine how long it took you. Did you ruffle those ruffles by hand or did you have a special ruffle foot for your sewing machine? Either way, it's beautiful and looks like you bought it from a brand store in Japan.
